How would you handle this Christmas related situation?

Lots of details, I apologize ahead of time for the long read.
My friend (known as B) and I are in a perdicament. We have a mutual aquaintence in our neighborhood (She will be known as L to save any confusion). Bear with me as it gets slightly complicated.
L has informed B and myself that she has purchased Christmas gifts for us and our children. She has also told us what exactly those gifts are, which I found to be odd, but assumed that she was just overly excited about gift giving (which I can relate to) and couldn't wait. For myself, she purchased a relatively expensive bottle of perfume, that she knew I really liked. For B she purchased a 36 piece dinnerware set (plates, cups, etc) with B's favorite pattern.
The problem:
B and myself both feel, even though we appreciate her thoughtfulness, and effort she placed into purchasing these gifts, that they are too extravagant and over the top. I find that perfume is reserved as a more intimate type of gift that I would only expect from my husband, relative, or even my very best friend, not somebody that I truly do not know. B feels as though a dinnerware set is much too extravagant and expensive to accept. Both of us are quite uncomfortable, and even though none of us are very close, still do not want to hurt L's feelings.
I do not know what she has purchased for my children, but I do know that she informed B that she had purchased an entire bed set for her son. Does this seem over the top as well?
Neither B nor myself can even begin to afford a gift to "match" what L is intending to give us. Whats more, I still find it odd that she told us so soon, and has made it a conversation piece on more than one occasion. B and I are also really worried that she may have gone too far, and really can't afford such generosity, but of course, that's not our business.
The even weirder part is L has been confiding in me that she doesn't really care to befriend B any longer, and B is aware of all this... very dramatic, and involved situation. So why even give her a gift? Especially after stating that she didn't intend to ever talk to B again nor did she plan on getting her anything.
It's all very confusing. To me it seems as though one of two things could be going on, either she has told us ahead of time and gone overboard because she thinks she can sort of buy our friendship, OR she is expecting extravagant gifts in return. Or maybe I'm way off base, I'm not sure at all. I hate assuming anything about anyone. i know I should just let her know my stance, but L is especially sensitive, and on more than one occasion, used rumors against others that hurt her feelings. She will be moving away (very very far away) very soon, and B and I both feel that any friction created at this point isn't worthwhile. Especially since I will be there for at least another year, and B will be there for the next 6 years (we are all military families). So the less drama, the better.
So... what whould any of you do in this situation? What is proper etiquette for this sort of thing. Any bit of advice is absolutely appreciated!
Just to clear up some apparant confusion, I didn't add the part about conflict between L and B to elicit any advice, as much as I appreciate all of you taking the time to comment on it. Also, I am not, nor have I ever, bad-mouthed B when L is talking to me about her. I simply say "uh-huh" or give completely neutral responses. So, I have nothing to worry about in that aspect. Once again, thank you for all of your efforts, but I only put that there for the purpose of giving everyone the full picture.
